Dr. Mernathan M. Sykes, was born Mernathan Banks August 15, 1953 in Demopolis, Alabama to Nathan Banks Sr. and Lucy Ann Banks. Her family moved to Chicago, IL around 1958, Mernathan was 5 years old at the time. She graduated John Marshall Harlan High School in 1971 and entered college at Southern IL University (SIU).
